CHELMSFORD, MA – April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Chelmsford Police Department is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind drivers of the deadly consequences of distracted driving.
According to the NHTSA, 3,308 people were killed in 2022 due to distracted driving crashes. Whether it’s texting, adjusting the GPS, eating, or even talking to passengers, distractions behind the wheel can be fatal.
“This month—and every month—we urge all drivers to stay focused and eliminate distractions behind the wheel,” said Chief Colin Spence of the Chelmsford Police Department. “No text, call, or momentary distraction is worth endangering a life.”
Chelmsford officers will be conducting targeted enforcement throughout April to identify and address distracted driving behaviors, particularly texting while driving, which remains one of the most dangerous forms of distraction.
How You Can Help:
- Put your phone away or use hands-free features.
- Program your GPS before you start driving.
- Avoid eating, grooming, or adjusting music while on the road.
- Speak up if you’re a passenger and the driver is distracted.
Chelmsford PD urges all motorists to “Just Drive” — because focused driving is safe driving.
