Chelmsford Police Department Announces the Retirement of Lieutenant Todd Ahern

CHELMSFORD — Police Chief Colin C. Spence and the Chelmsford Police Department announce the retirement of Lieutenant Todd Ahern, who will conclude his more than 31 years of dedicated service to the Town of Chelmsford on Friday, October 31, 2025.

Lt. Ahern began his career with the Chelmsford Police Department in January 1994. Starting as a patrol officer, he quickly distinguished himself through his professionalism, compassion, and commitment to the Chelmsford community. Early in his career, he served as a D.A.R.E. Officer and a member of the Community Policing Unit, where he built strong and lasting relationships with residents and youth across town.

He later joined the Detective Bureau, where his investigative skill and attention to detail contributed to the successful resolution of numerous cases. In 2004, Lt. Ahern was promoted to Sergeant, continuing his investigative work, and in 2015, he earned the rank of Lieutenant, serving as a Shift Commander across multiple shifts.

Lt. Ahern also played an instrumental role in establishing the Community Engagement and Wellness Unit, expanding the department’s outreach initiatives and working closely with CPD’s mental health clinician to support residents in need. Most recently, he served as Lieutenant in the Detective Bureau, providing leadership, mentorship, and experience to both sworn officers and civilian staff.

Throughout his career, Lt. Ahern has been known for his leadership, sense of humor, and genuine care for those around him — traits that have left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the community he served.

Chief Spence praised Lt. Ahern’s distinguished service, stating:

On behalf of the Chelmsford Police Department and the Town of Chelmsford, I want to extend my deepest gratitude for your over 31 years of dedicated service. Your distinguished career exemplified leadership, unwavering commitment, dedication, and integrity and stands as a model of public service. Thank you for your commitment to our department and the community.”

Lt. Ahern’s professionalism, compassion, and humor will be greatly missed. The Chelmsford Police Department extends its best wishes as he begins this next chapter of his life. He will always be a valued member of the CPD family.
