CHELMSFORD – Chief James Spinney reports that the Chelmsford Police Department pursued and arrested two suspects in connection with an Amber Alert and stolen vehicle report on Monday night.
On Monday, Feb. 27, at approximately 9 p.m., an Amber Alert was issued after a Honda Pilot was stolen from Lawrence while a two-year-old was in the vehicle.
At about 9:35 p.m., Chelmsford Police Officer Christopher Chipchak located the stolen Honda Pilot traveling on Chelmsford Street in the Town of Chelmsford. Officer Chipchak attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled onto Interstate 495 South.
Officer Chipchak was quickly joined by Officer Steven Buckley, who was also in the area of Chelmsford Street searching for the vehicle.
Officer Chipchak and Officer Buckley maintained visual contact and followed the vehicle as it refused to stop for the police on Interstate 495.
This vehicle continued to flee down Interstate 495 south, as Chelmsford Police pursued it and broadcast its location to law enforcement partners. The vehicle exited the interstate onto Route 62 in the town of Berlin, where it is believed to have run out of fuel, forcing it to come to a stop.
Chelmsford Officers Chipchak, Buckley, K-9 Officer Dave Leo and Sergeant Nick Ziminsky were able to take two occupants, a male and female who allegedly resisted arrest, into custody without anyone being injured.
A short time after the suspects were taken into custody, Chelmsford Police Officers were joined on-scene by officers from the Berlin Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police.
It was at about this time that information was relayed that the two-year-old child had been located at Lawrence General Hospital.
The two suspects were transported by Massachusetts State Police to Lawrence Police, where the suspects were charged and booked by Lawrence Police. Both suspects are expected to be arraigned today in Lawrence District Court.
“I would like to commend our officers for a job well done,” said Chief Spinney. “This was a highly stressful event where a two-year-old child was reported to be in great danger. Our Officers maintained composure and brought these two dangerous suspects into custody.”
Chelmsford Police anticipate filing additional charges against the two at a later date as a result of their actions in the Town of Chelmsford.
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
