Chelmsford Police Department Announces Promotions to Lieutenant and Sergeant

Chelmsford, MA — Chief Colin Spence is proud to announce the promotion of two outstanding members of the Chelmsford Police Department: Sergeant Steve Fredericks has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and Officer Craig Mead has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Both individuals have demonstrated exemplary dedication, leadership, and service to the department and the Chelmsford community.

The official swearing-in ceremony for Lieutenant Fredericks and Sergeant Mead was held on May 6, 2025, at the Chelmsford Police Department Community Room.

Lieutenant Steve Fredericks began his career with the Chelmsford Police Department in 1998. He served as a patrol officer and spent six years in the Traffic Unit before being promoted to Sergeant in 2012. Over the course of his career, Lt. Fredericks has been involved in some of the most critical incidents the town has faced and has earned numerous departmental honors, including:

  • – Four Awards for Outstanding Performance of Duty
  • – One Lifesaving Award
  • – A Letter of Commendation for apprehending two robbery suspects

Lt. Fredericks has been deeply involved in community programs such as the Mock Crash, Community Read-In, and Children’s Safety Day. A U.S. Army Reserves veteran with the rank of Sergeant, he has also contributed to several charitable efforts including CPAL for over 20 years, Toys for Tots Fill-A-Cruiser, and fundraising marathons for the Boston Medical Center and Martin Richard Foundation.

Sergeant Craig Mead, a lifelong Chelmsford resident, joined the Army National Guard in 2012 as a military police officer and currently holds the rank of Staff Sergeant. He self-sponsored through the police academy and was hired by the Chelmsford Police Department in 2016. Since then, Sgt. Mead has distinguished himself as a highly trained and respected member of the department.

He currently serves on the NEMLEC SWAT Team, Police Honor Guard, Motorcycle Unit, and is a Field Training Officer. Additionally, Sgt. Mead is an instructor in firearms, less-lethal systems, and active shooter response both within the department and at regional police academies. His honors include:

  • – Two Awards for Valor
  • – One Lifesaving Award
