In the early morning hours of March 1, 2026, the Chelmsford Police Department received a 911 call reporting that a juvenile had left their residence with a knife after making threats of self-harm.
Officers were immediately dispatched to the residence and began searching the surrounding area. Through a preliminary investigation, officers determined that the juvenile had entered a nearby wooded area.
Officer Leo and his K9 partner, Alun, responded to the scene and began conducting a ground search of the wooded area. Sergeant Brady also responded and deployed the department’s Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), which is equipped with infrared capabilities. Shortly after launching the drone, Sergeant Brady was able to locate the juvenile in a wooded area a short distance from the residence. Officers were then able to safely reach the juvenile and bring the situation to a safe resolution.
Sergeant Brady completed FAA drone pilot certification several years ago and has utilized the department’s UAS in numerous investigations and search efforts. The coordinated use of department resources, including K9 and drone technology, allowed officers to quickly locate the juvenile.
This successful outcome was the result of coordinated teamwork involving Lieutenant Zimisnky, Sergeant Thayer, Sergeant Brady, Officer Brown (reporting officer), Officer Rose, Officer Stark, Officer Cerulo, Officer Leo, and K9 Alun.
The Chelmsford Police Department is grateful for the swift and professional response of all personnel involved and is relieved that the incident concluded safely.
